A 6km paddle on canal (with tunnel and aqueduct) and then returning on the river Goyt (Easy Grade 2 rapids and weir)

You will need a torch for the tunnel and helmet for the river section. This is an ideal river for those new to moving water. Kayaks are available to borrow from the club - Click here for more information or from the information page of the club website.

Meet at either the pool in Widnes at 9.00am to share cars or if you must, go direct to Romiley Pool and Fitness for 10:00 am Map below.
Romiley Pool & Fitness Centre, Hole House Fold, Stockport, Cheshire, SK6 4BB

To use the canal from Romiley Pool and Fitness to the Aqueduct over the river. Portage the tunnel (unless you feel like some adventure...). From the nearside of the aqueduct there is a footpath down the near embankment to the riverside. The River then doubles back on itself. Paddle down through the MCC site, down to the large sloping weir (Which is now broken in the middle. Get out river right at the weir (above it) and walk 100m to the road and a further 200m to the car park

Please note that the weir at Otterspool 1km downstream from here (A627 bridge over the R. Goyt) is now very DANGEROUS as a new hydraulic turbine has been installed at the old get out in the right hand arch.

It is then a 500m walk back to the start. We usually do the shuttle at the start and the driver can walk back up and meet the group at Church Street bridge (alternative get in) on the canal after they have had a warm up and short paddle. This is a great beginner's trip because of the flat water at the start before you hit the river and because of the really easy and short shuttle.'

Travel: From the M60 take Junction 27 (Next Junction after Junction 1 Stockport Pyramid). Follow A560 to Bredbury, right at second roundabout (do NOT go under railway bridge). Past MacDonalds on left, left at lights and then right at next set of lights (Esso garage on right). At next lights go straight over (Cow and Gate pub on right). This is the B6104. After 400m the road crosses the Canal. 1st left into the Car Park of Romiley Pool and Fitness (Get-in) More Photos of the river / Trip ..........
