You guessed it, this is balancing the boat on the back end. It's easiest to get into this position by doing a slow and controlled cartwheel - as the boat becomes almost vertical on the back end lean back a little putting your paddle in the water above your head, hands about parallel with your shoulders. This gives you the balance point and control to correct any tipping.
