Sea Paddle on the North Coast of Anglesey 28/01/2023 by Ian Crook
The three of us met up at Bangor services promptly at 9am, and after agreeing to head to north Anglesey, we headed straight on to Porth Eilian.
After the usual faff, and the novelty of unloading kayaks onto the middle of a roundabout, we set off west from Porth Eilian against the flooding tide. The tide wasn’t due to turn until 15:30, which meant it would be against us for the whole of our outbound journey, but in our favour on the return. The same was true of the modest wind.
After a brief visit to Amlwch harbour, the headland at Trwyn Costog was our first little sprint. We’d stayed close to shore to keep out of the main flow up to this point, but this slight headland required a 5-minute effort to get us around into Bull Bay.
After Bull Bay we passed several pods of Porpoise and the occasional seal, before pulling into Porth Wen for lunch at the brickworks.
The return trip with tide and wind behind us seemed to go quickly, with lots of chatting and minimal effort.
