Trearddur Bay to Rhoscolyn Sea kayak paddle 06/08/2023 by Catriona Hare

Martin Paige and I took up Adya’s suggestion of a peer paddle on Anglesey. The wind had finally died down enough to venture out for a sea trip, who knows when the opportunity might come round again.

We met at Bangor Services to have final review of the weather forecast and to agree a trip we would all be comfortable with. We decided to launch from Trearddur and head to Rhoscolyn. From the weather forecast we were expecting a WNW and westerly winds between 12 and 14mph and roughly 1m of swell, with the wind reducing later in the day. The conditions were as expected on the way out with a few more exciting conditions and some surfing round the headlands especially near Rhoscolyn which we approached about 2hrs before high water. We looked at the waves round the Beacon from our inshore route and decided to stay well clear.

We had lunch at Rhoscolyn while we waited for slack water and to start our return trip.  On the way back we had quite a messy sea with unpredictable quartering and side on waves, many with white tops. We looked for a good line between going offshore into the stronger winds and avoiding the breaking waves close to land.

Definitely a good trip for Adya to test out how her new boat responds to rough water. A couple of photos from the calmer parts of the trip, needless to say I was holding on to the paddle with both hands the rest of the time.
