River Eden – Langwathby to Lazonby @ 0.75 (Great Corby Gauge)

The Aldridges (Martin and Nikki) had kindly offered an end-of-year open boat trip in the Lakes. Unfortunately, I could only make day 1 but, it was a fantastic day anyway.

We met at Greggs just off the M6 at the Skersgill Interchange near Penrith. There was a rough plan to paddle the Eden with the most popular section being Lazonby to Armathwaite section. However, on arrival, Martin and Nikki were concerned that there wasn’t enough water to run this section and actually, the higher section (that needs less water to run) would be the only nearby river that we could paddle that day –

With a plan in place, we got everyone and the boats to the start point at Langwathby (54°41’39.9″N 2°40’30.9″W) and sorted out a simple shuttle to the get-off point at Lazonby (54°45’19.7″N 2°42’03.9″W) taking notes of the bridge that we would keep our eyes out for at the get out.

We were on the water without much drama and making our way down a fairly gentle Grade 1 with some small Grade 2 rapids which we made good progress on without drama.

On this section, there is a Grade 4 natural weir, Eden Lacy Falls which passes a high railway bridge where the guidebook suggests to keep the river left to be in the correct place to inspect the weir. After much inspection, we could see a ‘ramp’ that was runnable.
