After the snow and ice of recent weeks had died off, six LCC paddlers planned for what was likely to be a bit of a scrape down the Lune.
We were, however, treated to an unexpected rise in levels due to some local rain overnight and early in the morning, which provided great levels in the end (0.88 on the Lowgill gauge).
After a short misdirection at the get-off location at Killinton Bridge, we finally dropped off a vehicle, and all met at the top (Lowgill or Beckfoot). Here, some kit was left in the van, coats and car keys were left on a wall, and an ill-fitting spray deck was used. Once sorted, we then battled the university groups and set off on what was a new river for some. The group spent some time getting used to the flow, catching some baby waves and practising our breaking in and out.
We navigated the first two gorges with style, passing the university groups on the way. Given the improved levels, rapids were less technical but a lot of fun. The standing waves were quite large, and some were above head height.

We had passed under the disused viaduct towering above, and then the first road bridge. We then arrived at “the strid” and got out of our boats to have a quick look. There was a relatively clear line to follow, but who knows what will happen when you get there.

Looks a great trip @sarah
Good trip, good write up, good photos, well done. I remember we used to get grief from the farmer if anyone went on the rocks at the left of the Strid – looks like you didn’t have any trouble?
