Anglesey Weekend No.4 – Saturday Porth Diana by Cornelia Graebner
Saturday was a sunny and windy day. We had to change our plans in the morning to avoid strong winds. Instead of paddling from Rhosneigr to Aberffraw, we set off from Porth Dafarch towards Treaddur Bay. We were hugging the coastline and had a mostly sheltered paddle towards Treaddur, exploring caves and hopping rocks, enjoying the sunshine and only occasionally having to paddle out in the wind. We had lunch in Porth Diana on a sunny, sheltered beach. The sheltered location gave us protection from the treacherous wind, which we realised once we paddled out of the bay and into the very strong headwind.
After a quick peak further along the coast, we turned around with the plan to stop over in Treaddur Bay on the way back. Paddling against strong headwinds into Treaddur Bay was the hardest part of the trip, which was rewarded by chill-out time on the beach and ice cream for some.
The way back to Porth Dafarch was mostly easy and we decided to paddle a bit further into the next bay. There we had fun company. An adult seal was swimming with us for a while, following one of the paddlers. The adult was then joined by two pups who seemed to think we were just the right audience for them to show off their skills to. They put on a fun show of swishing and swirling through the water, sticking around for quite a while. They were so lively and vivacious that none of us managed to capture them on a photo as more than a swish.
After our exclusive seal entertainment, we paddled back to Porth Dafarch.
