Flatwater freestyle competition – Harvey and Mayo
The first ever flatwater freestyle competition at the pool tonight. 7 keen competitors came down to practice some freestyle. The first half an hour we got some coaching from Maya-ray Cross then the second half we competed.
The big moves of the day came from Geoff with the lunar loop and lots of cartwheels.
Anyone can do this in any boat, and I encourage anyone to try it out; you can score from just a roll, or even a flat spin. I think the competition makes the pool session way more fun!
The club has a really good group of aspiring freestyle paddlers including K1, (sat in the boat on your bum), C1 (knelt in the boat) and OC1 (Knelt in the boat with an open cockpit) paddlers. I spent the first half hour of the session doing some coaching with the seven paddlers that turned up and did some tricks of my own. Harvey Harwood
The second half hour was time for some fun competition, Paul and Harvey had prepared the scoresheets and organised everything, each competitor did 30 second runs throwing as many tricks as they could. It was a really fun event and I hope everyone enjoyed it. It will be great to run some of these coaching events and competitions down at the docks with the club when it warms up a bit. It would be even better to run it as a Freestyle Inspirers event and maybe get more team paddlers to come along. Maya-ray Cross
At the Freestyle World Championships being held in Nottingham this year there is going to be a flatwater freestyle competition held open to anyone with a roll. So get practicing and get entering.
