Junior Paddle to Farndon and Back

We arrived at Farndon and had a good look at the river to decide on our route. As it was very cold and raining heavily, we decided to paddle upstream as far as we could, then turn around and float back down, no car shuttles or waiting around needed. As soon as we were ready, our intrepid team got on the water at what should have been steps, but as it was flooded, it made a good access ramp, then over a submerged fence onto the river.

The flow of the water was strong, so we had to paddle hard. Everyone was very determined and paddled with oomph, thinking about paddling technique to keep momentum. We had a couple of pauses in eddies to catch our breath and stay together.

The river narrowed, the flow intensified, and Finn decided it was time to turn back. What a difference that was! We bobbed along, effortlessly.

Pete, Rich and Finn decided to try to ‘off-river’ into a flooded adjacent field, which was harder than it looked!

We had a nice chance to chat and were back at the cars before we knew it.

Alice provided everyone with pot noodles, which were very appreciated to warm up some cold fingers.

Finally, the sun came out, and we walked down the track to look under the bridge at the arches to see which we might go through the next time we paddle from Farndon, downstream.
