Unforgettable Paddle Across the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Through Historic Tunnels by Fraizer & Laura
On 1st November 2025, around 40 members of the club recently went kayaking along the Llangollen Canal. The journey included a crossing of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and a thrilling paddle through historic canal tunnels.
Kayaking the “Stream in the Sky”
It was my mum’s and mine first time across the iconic “Stream in the Sky,” and I must say it did not disappoint! Standing 126 feet above the River Dee, the views were spectacular. Paddling over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct felt completely surreal!
We started our day at the Poachers Arms and paddled to the Trevor Basin for a well-deserved lunch. That break provided a much-needed rest (for us two anyway… many couldn’t wait to get back on the water!). I must admit the 11 miles were challenging, especially when we were paddling against the current at the start. But it was 100% worth the effort. Coming back with the current made the paddle much easier, allowing us to truly take in more of the amazing views.

Journey into Darkness: The Tunnels
The adventure didn’t end with the aqueduct. The route included navigating two notable tunnels: the Whitehouse Tunnel and the Chirk Tunnel. The Tunnels was my favourite part! We were ready with our headtorch, as the tunnels were extremely dark. Emerging from those narrow, dark passages into the daylight was a fantastic feeling and a memorable contrast to the open skies of the aqueduct crossing.

While narrowboats are a common sight, but this day, the rising number of kayakers, SUPs, and canoeists truly took over the water. It was a group experience and a memory we will never forget!

A great write up Fraizer. I’m glad you enjoyed it and I’ve got to say that you did amazing to paddle all that way. Well done.
