Anglesey Weekend No.4 – overview by Dave Keig

  • by

So after many trips to the docks under Kevin’s wing from paddle start to paddle fit, then jumping on a few of Eamon’s and Roger’s slower fitness sessions and of course John Fay’s and Jim Duffy’s fun dock paddles I joined the Anglesey weekend paddle for my first sea trip and it was fantastic.

On the Saturday trip we set off, buddying up to save car parking spaces. I was with Ian for a scenic trip on the A55 before a change of plan took us back to the local beach.  It was a sunny day, the brief was to follow the coast and a stop for lunch then see how the afternoon pans out if we go further. So off we went, rock hopping along the way in and out of coves and across bays in the wind and a rest and lunch before we moved on.  A stop on the way back allowed me to play in the wind under Roger’s watchful eye.

I missed out on the seal spotting at the end but for me it was a great experience, so looking forward to tomorrow’s trip.

The next day’s trip was a venture up and down the Menai Strait.  A cracking’ paddle very scenic dealing with current and swells.  In my case, one challenge too many, left me capsized and a dip in the strait enabling Keith to demonstrate his rescue skills!  So onward, we went lunching by Minadwyn boat house just under the bridge. We fought the wind up the coast to “Millionaires Row” exploring coves and little islands and the old Water Mill before turning around and speeding down the strait and the swellies at breakneck speed. After the two bridges, we headed back past Nelson’s memorial to the slip and get out to sort our gear and go for a coffee before heading home.

Thanks to everyone for great company, guidance and encouragement which made this, my first sea trip, an adventure to remember and was gutted it was only a weekend!  Looking forward to, hopefully, many more trips.
