2025 08 31 River Dee organised by Sarah Gille

Nine of us met up at Horseshoe Falls car park and then shuttled most of the cars to the bottom. Town Falls was still a little bony, so we opted to take the “secret tunnel” up to the road and back to the Pavilion Car Park.

The falls were low, so it was relatively easy to take the rocky steps down to the river’s left. We practised “tailies” at every opportunity, with Ben trying to teach the rest of us about “dropping the outside edge” and “leaning back”.

The river was very low, but Serpent’s tail still felt it had more than enough water to make it interesting. Anthony was paddling his “pack raft”, which made it down effortlessly.

We were admiring the business sense of the “paddlers’ snack spot” just above the remains of the broken weir, when we heard a warning shout from Stuart. We sped towards the weir to see Nick with a cushion of water pouring over his head. I immediately thought of a foot entrapment. Ben jumped out of his boat onto the “magnetic rock” while I yelled at Nick to let go of his boat.
