Rhosneigr to Eglwys Cwyfan (Church in the Sea) – Saturday 9th May 2026

Rhosneigr to Eglwys Cwyfan (Church in the Sea) – Saturday 9th May 2026 by Eamon

Having met at the A55 Bangor services, two groups of paddlers decided on their destinations and headed for the west coast of Anglesey. Keith decided the sheltered waters of Porth Dafarch & Trearddur Bay best suited his group of three new sea kayakers, whilst Ian, Christine, Mike, and I, having considered the north coast, headed for Rhosneigr.

Our plan was to follow the route undertaken over Christmas and paddle from Rhosneigr to Eglwys Cwyfan and back. Whilst temperatures were a touch warmer on this occasion, we expected a slightly more challenging paddle with forecast N/NE winds of f4(5) and NNW swells of 1m or so. We launched just after low tide and set off. The wind and following sea helpfully assisted our progress southwards.

About an hour later, we had landed near the church, after a brief but close encounter with a couple of porpoises. We headed to the back of the beach for some shelter and the noticeably warmer environment, our refreshments only briefly interrupted by a quick dash to retrieve a floating boat from the incoming tide. Apparently, a group of pirates was seen strolling along the beach. The early start had caught up with me, and I’d been resting my eyes, so I had missed this sighting.

The return leg required considerably more effort as we paddled against wind and swell, but we had great sport hugging the coastline as close as we dared. An occasional breather in a sheltered spot or two was welcomed and all too soon we were back among the windsurfers and hydro-foilers(?) at Rhosneigr.

The two groups met up for a coffee at the surf cafe and shared tales of their adventures, with Keith’s group heading home and our group to Anglesey Outdoors, in readiness for a coaching session with Nick Cunliffe the following day.
