Sea Kayaking Safari – Brittany – Day 1 Kerpenhir Point to Méaban Island

7.20am on Day 1 of an LCC first – Sea Kayaking Brittany – half the camp is still in bed after a late arrival; Stuart and Andy are pitching tents having arrived sometime in the night and only just being allowed into the site.

Having this in mind, we planned an easy trip around the bay or along the coast, leaving at 10.00am.

On the water, Keith gives us a brief, blaming Catriona for a last-minute change of plan… out to the island of Meában.

We set off in beautiful sunshine across flat calm seas, arriving at the island in no time at all. “Access Interdit” read the sign, so we settled for paddling around the island. 

On reaching the furthest corner, we heard the call of ice cream and paddled a diagonal to a beach back on the mainland.

We landed for elevenses and Keith led the group on a hike to somewhere shady… most of the group opted for the shady rocks on the beach instead.

After feeding, watering and sun creaming, we were on our way back, following the coast until we came to the entrance to the bay; the tidal stream flowing out of the bay was clearly visible in the form of white water and yachts sailing very fast into the wind.

We lined up with a yacht struggling into the bay, motor on full power and making little to no progress. We each waved as we kayaked past the yacht (in the lesser flow of shallower water) and around the harbour wall.

We made another elevenses stop in the bay for a drink at a bar that was not serving ice cream, and watched the tidal stream die off and the tide turn.

Back on the water, we had a short crossing across the bay entrance and the tidal stream to the start. The flow had reduced but the boat traffic hadn’t. As a tight-knit group we cut a route across, dodging boats and soon arrived back to somewhere near where we started.
