Reflection on a Memorable Day of Kayaking – From Farndon Bridge to Sandy Lane by Elena B

Today was an adventure to remember — an experience that enriched me not only through the stunning scenery and the calmness of nature but especially through the incredible people I had the pleasure of meeting. Alongside a group of 12 experienced paddlers, I set off on a kayaking trip from Farndon Bridge to Sandy Lane, on the River Dee — a route known for its natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere.

This opportunity was made possible thanks to the generosity of John Fay, who offered me his kayak, life jacket, and even a ride to the meeting point. That meant so much to me, and I’m deeply grateful. John made an impression from the very first day at the club with his wide smile, playful spirit, sense of humour, and contagious zest for life.

When we arrived at Farndon Bridge, the air was filled with energy and excitement. That’s when I met a lovely couple, Margaret and her husband, who surprised me with their stories about their travels to Romania. Margaret enthusiastically described their experience with shepherds and flocks of sheep, the mysterious Bran Castle, the rich and delicious traditional food, and the warmth with which they were welcomed. They expressed a deep desire to return, and I felt both proud and touched to hear my home country spoken of so fondly.

After everyone gathered, we exchanged greetings and stories. I was especially curious to learn how each person began their journey into kayaking — I sensed that each one had a unique, adventure-filled story worth hearing.

Zoe stood out not only for her beautiful two-toned braided hair but also for her openness. She shared some of her 13 years of kayaking experiences, filled with wonderful memories and a few scars that come with a life of adventure. That’s part of the beauty of storytelling. I found a genuine connection with her and even shared parts of my childhood. Spending time with Zoe was truly special, and I hope we meet again soon.

Basia, a calm and nature-connected presence, struck me with her quiet appreciation of birds and landscapes. Though we didn’t exchange many words, her kind smile and the beautiful moments she captured in photos and videos spoke volumes. I’m sure we’ll have more chances to talk in the future.

Dawn, silent and focused, paddled on a board with such precision and ease. She was always at the front of the group, like a natural leader. I’m honestly amazed she didn’t fall in the water — I definitely would have, multiple times!

Then there was Mich — or Michael, I’m not entirely sure of the name — who was full of vibrant energy. He paddled along the riverbanks, weaving through branches, embracing the trees, soaking up the sunshine, and even taking refreshing dips in the water. He helped us pull up onto the shore using what felt like superhuman strength and joked about the muddy “brown sauce” covering our feet during lunch — his humour made the day even better.

Mel was as friendly and determined as ever. She paddled confidently on her board and told me about the dogs she had adopted and her Romanian friends. I shared a bit about my new job, and she kindly offered me a delicious homemade flapjack. I’d met her before during rolling and rescue sessions at Liverpool Marina, run by Adya — someone who stands out for her attention to detail and her natural ability to lead. Adya is sociable, fun, and makes rolling look as easy as breathing. Watching her paddle today was like watching someone float effortlessly.
