Sea Kayak Paddle from Hangman’s Point to Puffin Island in A Scenic Coastal Adventure
March 23, 2025 – North Wales
A team of six adventurous paddlers took to the water this weekend, navigating the scenic stretch between Hangman’s Point and Puffin Island by sea kayak. The group — Catriona, Adya, Keith, Andrew, Ella, and Stuart — enjoyed favorable weather and calm seas as they made the challenging round trip along the North Wales coast.
The route, popular with experienced kayakers, includes dynamic tidal flows, hidden coves, and breathtaking views of the Snowdonia backdrop. The team set off early Sunday morning to catch the optimal tidal window, paddling in formation past rocky headlands and swirling eddies.
Along the way, the group passed a haunting piece of maritime history: the wreck of the Hoveringham II. The Hoveringham II was a steel-hulled suction dredger that was built in 1954. It sank after a leak, capsizing and sinking off Puffin Island, Anglesey. The four crew members were rescued by the Holyhead Lifeboat in 1971. The wreck eventually rolled over and sank 300m from Penmon Quarry jetty.
