The Mull of Kintyre – Day 5 Journey Home

2026 05 28 The Mull of Kintyre – Day 5 Journey Home

We awoke the next morning with sand all over the tents. We packed away before most of the Caledonian MacBrayne workers had arrived for the first ferry and headed as planned to Cafe Ca’Dora, where we had enjoyed several breakfasts during last year’s trip to Islay and Jura.

We awoke the next morning with sand all over the tents.

We had a good team of 9 paddlers this year, and all paddled some very long days, often in rough seas or with strong headwinds. Some of the water paddled has very strong tides, and much of the coastline has zero opportunities for safe landing. Despite this, we managed to find excellent campsites, often with white (shell) sand, and 3 of the camps had quality public loos which stayed open all night.

The Island of Gigha is well worth a future visit. It has a ferry which costs only £3.75 as a foot passenger with a “Kayak or surfboard” each way. It is relatively sheltered from Atlantic Swells by Islay and Jura and has some of the best beaches in the area.

If you are looking to have a go at camping from your sea kayak, why not book on the Walney Island trip later this year? This is sort of wild camping from your boat, but at the Peel Island Pub campsite. This is ideal for anyone wanting to have a safe introduction to sea kayak camping. Dates and details here……..
