Introductory WW River Trip (Grade 2-3 River) – Coordinator Harry Ruggles

Saturday, 18 November

“Us beginners met at the compound at 08.30am to collect some club boats. Harry helped us select our boats before helping me secure my boat to my new roof bars. We then drove to Ponsonby Arms car park to meet the rest of the group. We paddled down the river in 3 groups, each group had a mixture of beginner and experienced paddlers. Ben led my group, which was made up of myself, Stuart, Ian and Sarah.

This was my first proper experience of moving water and when I initially looked at the Dee I was a little anxious about how fast it seemed to be flowing. However, my group were really encouraging and supportive. We paddled down the river slowly whilst taking time to practice skills like breaking in or out of eddies and ferry gliding. I quickly gained more confidence and began to really enjoy the paddle.

We ended at Ty Mawr Country Park, loaded are boats and headed back to the compound at the docks. This was an excellent introductory trip and helped me improve my paddling and gain confidence on moving water. Thanks all for a great time! ”

Thanks,

Ella Botzenhardt
