Sea Kayaking Safari – Brittany – Day 6
2026 08 21 Quiberon Peninsula by Stuart Conway
Starting just south of the harbour in Quiberon, our club paddlers gathered this morning for a relaxed and scenic coastal journey. With the open Atlantic swell safely blocked by the land, our route focused entirely along the sheltered eastern side of the peninsula, offering us a glassy, forgiving surface and postcard-worthy coastal views from the very first stroke.

Gliding past the calm waters bordering the Aérodrome de Quiberon, we kept a steady, conversational pace, watching the light aircraft overhead while soaking in the unique perspective of the rugged coastline. From there, we pushed northward toward the charming and bustling marina at Port-Haliguen. The colourful masts and lively boat traffic made for an interesting crossing of the harbour mouth.
After a late elevenses, we paddled around the end towards some rocky outcrops and islands marking the channel around the peninsula. The vibrant seas gave a bit of excitement and made for a fantastic halfway turning point before we rotated our bows southward for the return leg.

The journey back down the shore was wonderfully peaceful, aided by a gentle breeze at our backs and the warm afternoon sun reflecting off the water. We couldn’t resist a short shore stop to stretch our legs and indulge in a proper café break, where our group was treated to a characteristically warm and welcoming French reception over steaming cups of coffee.

Reinvigorated, we completed the final stretch back to our original launch site. Rather than packing up immediately, we spent a productive 30 minutes in the shallows brushing up on our safety techniques, practising a range of essential rescue skills to keep our group sharp. All in all, it was a thoroughly lovely, relaxed day on the water that reminded us why this coastline is such a club favourite in Brittany.
